Akers Financial Group specializes in serving clients in or near retirement.  By using a conservative approach to investing (with emphasis on preserving and protecting assets), Akers Financial Group can offer clients the best of investments available from banks, brokerage firms, and insurance companies.

Brian A. Akers, CFP® - President and Founder
Senior Wealth Advisor
 
Brian has been in the financial services industry for over 25 years. His sound, conservative guidance and tax-saving strategies have helped numerous clients to build, protect, and preserve their financial assets. As a Certified Financial Planner™ practitioner since July 1991. Brian has lectured throughout Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania, co-hosted radio shows, and appeared as a guest expert on Fox 45 and WUSA Channel 9 News. He is also a recipient of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Baltimore Five Star Wealth Manager Award for Overall Satisfaction.  As part of this elite Five Star Group, Brian is recognized for his outstanding “client representation, operating with an emphasis on integrity and service”.  Brian has a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Virginia Tech, holds licenses for life, health, property and casualty insurance, series 7 and 65, and is a FINRA General Securities Representative.   
 
Brian handles a number of responsibilities on a daily basis including: 
 
  • Meeting with clients to discuss investment strategies
  • Developing, servicing and delivering financial planning to clients
  • Researching investment and product offerings
  • Developing client event presentations
  • Ensuring clients feel secure and stress-free during their retirement years regarding their money

Brian also serves as a Trustee of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, a Harford Christian Educational Foundation board member, a Deacon and Trustee at North Harford Baptist Church. He enjoys coaching high school, AAU, and recreation basketball teams.  Brian is a life-time resident of Harford County and lives in Jarrettsville with his wife, Jeanne and two children.

  

 
Jeffery L. Akers - Vice President
Associate Wealth Advisor
 
Jeff joined the financial services industry in 2000 and is now Vice President of Akers Financial Group, Inc. He has completed two advanced degrees, including a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling, holds licenses in life and health insurance, and is a FINRA General Securities Representative. Jeff is uniquely qualified to help clients decipher their financial needs and goals. He specializes in the creative development of conservative strategies, helping retirees to preserve their assets while seeking reasonable growth. 
 
 
Jeff’s primary responsibilities include: 
 
  • Developing, servicing and delivering financial planning to clients
  • Research concerning market conditions and available products
  • Assisting in developing client event presentations
  • Meeting with clients to discuss investment strategies

Jeff also enjoys serving his community through Crossroads Community Church.  Jeff and his wife, Lynn currently reside in Bel Air with their two sons. 

 

 
  
Leah A. Gray
Director of Operations
 
Leah became part of the Akers team in July of 2010.  She has been in the finance industry since 1996.  Her years of regional brokerage firm and independant firm experiences as well as her experience in operations, branch procedures and client services allow her the ability to fulfill all our clients requests.  

 

Leah’s primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Initiating new client forms processing
  • Following up with clients as needed to make sure all paperwork is processed correctly
  • Processing new accounts, account transfers, new contributions and redemptions and beneficiary changes
  • Handling day-to-day operational activities
  • Processing client service requests

 A lifetime resident of Harford County, Leah enjoys spending time with her son and actively participates in local theatre and choirs.

   

    
Theresa Karschner
Administrative Assistant /
Director of First Impressions
 
In October 2004, Theresa Karschner began working for Akers Financial Group.  Her background encompasses a variety of fields.  She worked for the federal government as a budget assistant for seven years.  After a few years at home with the children, she began teaching at Harford Christian School (HCS) where she put her Office Education degree to use.  During her 15-year tenure at HCS, she was a typing, office practice and word processing teacher, yearbook advisor, athletic department secretary, and cheerleading coach.
 
Theresa’s responsibilities include:
 
  • Director of Hospitality
  • Administration of client services
  • Management of calendar and appointments

Theresa is a life-long resident of Harford County.  She and her husband Charles reside in Darlington and have three children.  They also have a grandson and one more on the way. 

 

  

Kim Haight
Administrative Assistant /
Director of Client Events / Marketing
 
Kim has been with Akers Financial Group since October 2010.  After attending Villa Julie College for paralegal studies, Kim began full time employment with a Bel Air Law firm.  She then worked for Harford County Government as a Planning Assistant for twelve years before becoming a homemaker for eight years.  During that time, Kim opened and operated New Again Consignment Boutique.  
 
Some of Kim’s day-to-day responsibilities include:
 
  • Administration of client services
  • Management of calendar and appointments
  • Coordinating activities related to client events
  • Focusing on client relationship management
  • Creating and distributing marketing communications

Kim is a Harford County native and now resides in Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons.  She greatly enjoys watching her boys' sporting events including football, baseball, lacrosse and track and field.

 

  

G. Maxwell Rash, III
Associate Financial Planner
 
In August 2012, Maxwell joined Akers as a full time Associate Financial Planner and a licensed life and health insurance specialist.  He is currently attending Towson University and plans to receive his major in Business Administration and Finance.  Maxwell initially became part of Akers Financial Group as an intern in November 2011.
 
Maxwell’s daily responsibilities are as follows: 
 
  • Developing and servicing financial plans
  • Assisting in research concerning market conditions and available products 

Maxwell resides in Bel Air and is also a life-long resident of Harford County.  He was involved in his family real estate business and held his real estate license from July 2009 through July 2012. Maxwell has previously served his community through several volunteer groups such as Harford County Boys and Girls Club, Bel Air Kiwanis Club, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity and Bel Air Downtown Alliance. 

 

 

Alexander J. Monk
Associate Financial Planner
 
Alex joined Akers Financial Group in May of 2012 as an Associate Financial Planner and is now a licensed life and health insurance specialist.  He holds an accounting degree from Towson University. 
 

 Alex’s primary responsibilities are as follows: 

  • Developing and servicing financial plans
  • Assisting in research concerning market conditions and available products 

Alex is a life-long resident of Harford County and now resides in Forest Hill.  He enjoys an array of sports, is an avid golfer, and enjoys culinary arts. 

                   

       
Christopher P. Cannon
Client Account Administration
 
Chris became part of the Akers team in May of 2012 as an intern.   He is currently majoring in Business at Salisbury University. 
 
A few of Chris’ daily responsibilities include: 
 
  • Paperwork processing
  • Account summation
  • Operational process support

Chris is also a life-long resident of Harford County and currently resides in Fallston.  He also enjoys golfing and basketball.
